The easiest store accounts to get in South Africa

Our editorial ranking, from most accessible to strictest — based on entry requirements and how each provider assesses affordability. No account is guaranteed; a credit check always applies.

Which store account is easiest to get?

Generally, value retailers (Ackermans, Jet, Mr Price) have the lowest entry requirements, which makes them the most accessible — especially for a first account. Premium accounts (Woolworths) assess affordability most strictly. Here's our ranking, easiest first:

#1

Ackermans  Easier

Low entry bar and a starting limit that grows with conduct make Ackermans one of the most accessible accounts — a common first account, open even to pensioners and grant recipients.

#2

Jet  Easier

A value TFG account with a lower entry point; accessible while still opening the door to the wider TFG group.

#3

Mr Price  Easier

MRP Money has relatively relaxed requirements and a quick online decision across six value brands.

#4

Edgars  Medium

A mainstream fashion account via RCS; attainable if you're employed and earn R2,000+ a month.

#5

Foschini  Medium

A TFG account with standard affordability checks; moderate to get, and useful across 20+ brands.

#6

Markham  Medium

The same TFG account as Foschini and Jet — moderate requirements, menswear focus.

#7

Truworths  Medium

Popular and mainstream, but with a proper affordability assessment and a clean 6-month interest-free plan.

#8

Woolworths  Stricter

The strictest affordability assessment of the majors — aimed at applicants with a stable, verifiable income.

What "easy" really means

Even the most accessible account still requires a valid SA ID, a verifiable income and passing a credit and affordability check under the National Credit Act. "Easy" means a lower bar — not skipping the checks. Anyone promising "guaranteed approval" is not being honest.

How to improve your chances

  • Apply where your income realistically fits
  • Make sure your details match your ID and bank records
  • Don't apply to many accounts at once — each triggers a credit enquiry
  • Check your credit report first (you're entitled to one free report a year)
